Amsterdam is one of the most culturally diverse cities in Europe. More than 55% of its residents have a migration background, representing over 180 nationalities and a rich mosaic of traditions, stories, and neighbourhood identities. This diversity is part of what makes the city vibrant, creative, and socially dynamic.
Yet many of these communities remain underrepresented in hospitality and tourism spaces, which are often designed with visitors — rather than locals — in mind. When cultural communities do not see themselves reflected in the places around them, it becomes harder to feel a sense of belonging. Hotels, cafés, and public spaces can play a powerful role in changing this by becoming platforms for cultural visibility, participation, and shared experiences.
